Basic Training Requirements

What training is required?

The Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area Council Board of Directors requires all volunteers with primary responsibility for working with girls be trained for the position they will assume or have assumed.

For Troop and Group Leaders

There are three courses in the leadership series for troop and group leaders:

  1. Getting Started

At least one adult from the troop must take Getting Started before the first meeting with the girls. It is recommended that as many troop adults as possible take this course, especially the troop registrar and treasurer. To arrange to take this training, please contact your community development director. (Note that this is the only course taken by arrangement – all other courses are offered on our training calendar. For information on how to register for those courses, click here.)

  2. New Leader Basics

At least one adult present at every troop meeting or outing must take New Leader Basics within three months of starting your troop, and before any troop outing or trip (whichever is soonest.) It is recommended that as many troop adults as possible take this course.

  3. Appropriate Age Level Leadership Training

At least one adult present at every troop meeting or outing must take the appropriate Age Level Leadership Training within three months of starting your troop, and before any troop outing or trip (whichever is soonest.) It is recommended that as many troop adults as possible take this course. Age level Leadership Trainings include Daisy Leadership Training, Brownie Leadership Training, Junior Leadership Training, and Teen Advisor Training (Cadette & Senior.)

Getting Started

Get the information and registration materials you need to start your troop. This course will include knowledge of council policies and procedures, health and safety procedures, involving parents, money matters, and planning your first four meetings. This course is required for at least one adult for the troop, and must be taken before your first meeting with the girls. It is recommended that the troop registrar and treasurer take this course.

New Leader Basics

An effective Girl Scout troop is about so much more than earning awards and selling cookies! Find out how you can help your girls develop their leadership skills and become girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. The course includes how to effectively partner with your girls to make their plans become a reality, as well as health and safety standards and taking girls on safe and fun outings. This course is required before going on any troop outings, and must be taken within three months of starting your troop (whichever is soonest.) At least one adult in attendance at every meeting or outing must take this course. It is preferable, but not required, to take this course before taking Leadership Training for the appropriate age level. Click here to find out how to register.

Appropriate Age Level Leadership Training

The appropriate age level Leadership Training is the third required course and must be taken within three months of the first meeting with girls, and before any troop outing (whichever is soonest). Choose the age level course of the girls you are, or will be, working with. Age level Leadership Trainings include Daisy Leadership Training, Brownie Leadership Training, Junior Leadership Training, and Teen Advisor Training (Cadette & Senior). It is preferable, but not required, to take New Leader Basics before taking the age level course.

Daisy Leadership Training: This course covers the Girl Scout Daisy program and gives leaders tips and tools for a fun program. Topics include how to effectively work with girls of this age, meeting planning, available resources, and more. This course is required within three months of starting your troop and before any troop outing or trip, and must be taken by at least one adult in attendance at every meeting or outing. It is preferable, but not required, to take New Leader Basics before taking this course. Click here to find out how to register.

Brownie Leadership Training: This course covers the Girl Scout Brownie program, including meeting planning, troop government, girl decision-making and planning, Try-Its, resources and more. This course is required within three months of starting your troop or bridging to Girl Scout Brownies, and must be taken by at least one adult in attendance at every meeting or outing. It is preferable, but not required, to take New Leader Basics before taking this course. Click here to find out how to register.

Junior Leadership Training: Learn how to effectively partner with Girl Scout Juniors. Troop government, tools for making girl planning and decision-making work with girls of this age, Girl Scout Junior awards, resources available, and lots more will be covered. This course is required within three months of starting your troop or bridging to Girl Scout Juniors, and must be taken by at least one adult in attendance at every meeting or outing. It is preferable, but not required, to take New Leader Basics before taking this course. Click here to find out how to register.

Teen Advisor Training: This course is intended for adults working with girls aged 11-17. Girls of this age have very definite ideas about what they want in their program! You’ll be provided with the tools to develop a positive working partnership with your girls. Limited information on Silver and Gold Awards will be given. If you wish to learn more about earning these awards, please attend the Awards for Older Girls course. Teen Advisor Training is required within three months of starting your troop or bridging to Girl Scout Cadettes, and must be taken by at least one adult in attendance at every meeting or outing. It is preferable, but not required, to take New Leader Basics before taking this course. Click here to find out how to register.

Other questions about basic training:

Do I have to be trained if I am not a troop leader but want to work with girls?
It is the policy of the Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area that all volunteers with primary responsibility for working with girls be trained for the position they will assume or have assumed. Each troop/group must have at least one registered and trained adult in attendance at every meeting or outing, and it is recommended that as many adults as possible who work with girls take New Leader Basics and the appropriate age level Leadership Training.

If I am an experienced leader changing age levels do I need training?
Once you have completed New Leader Basics, you must take the appropriate age level Leadership Training for your new age level. You must take this course within three months of your first meeting with the girls at the new age level.

I am the co-leader (or troop helper) so can I just take the Age Level class?
It is required that at least one adult present at every troop meeting or outing take New Leader Basics and the appropriate age level Leadership Training. It is recommended that as many adults who work with girls as possible take these courses. You will have a greater understanding of the Girl Scout program, and the adult leadership team will function much more effectively if they have all taken the training.

We are a co-op troop; do we all have to take training?
It is required that at least one adult present at every troop meeting or outing take New Leader Basics and the appropriate age level Leadership Training. If the adults in the troop will rotate responsibility for troop meetings, each adult will need to take these courses. You will find that a trained adult leadership team will have a more smoothly running troop experience and will be more likely to stay together.

Co-op troop training is offered by request on a limited basis. This can be a valuable training for tips on effectively managing a co-op troop. Contact the Adult Training Specialist at (510) 562-8470 x158 to request Co-Op Troop Training.
