The Volunteer Screening Process

Any adult (over 18) can be active in the Girl Scouts by working with and encouraging her/his own daughter. If, however, he or she would like to be more involved and work directly with girls who are not related to him/her he or she must complete the "Volunteer Screening Process".

The "Volunteer Screening Process" is complete when:

  1. The Volunteer Applicant receives the "Volunteer Management Policies"
  2. Council receives form "257x Volunteer Screening Application" (for those of you familiar with the process, the 846x Acknowledgement Form is now included in the application)
  3. Council receives Three "565x Volunteer References Inquiry" Forms (from persons not related to the applicant)

To obtain a copy of these documents:

Return all required document to the Volunteer Screening Specialist:

Volunteer Screening Specialist
P.O. Box 2249
Oakland, CA 94621-0149

To drive girls other then your daughter...

Download and fill out form "567x Driver Information" and return to your troop leader. Then send a photocopy of current driver's license and proof of insurance to the council at the above address.

These documents (except form 567x) are not required to go through the troop leader, but he or she may organize parents to complete the process.

Volunteer Screening Check List

Be sure to complete the following.

For All Applicants:

  • One “257x Volunteer Screening Application” (this should be sent first)
  • Three “565x Volunteer Reference Inquiry” Forms
    1. These should be completed by persons not related to the applicant, and returned directly to the council
    2. These should be completed in FULL, do not leave any fields blank or the reference form will be returned.
  • If you have recently changed your name: family, married, hyphenated, abbreviated or otherwise, please make note of it on all volunteer screening materials, and notify the council registrars at (510) 562-8470 so that your volunteer application can be correctly linked with your registration.
  • If you have recently moved, or think you might be registered at a different address, please make note on all application materials and notify the council registrars at (510) 562-8470 so that your volunteer application can be correctly linked with your registration.

For Applicants who are willing to drive girls other then his/her daughter:

  • Form “567x Driver Information”
    1. Return to the troop leader
  • Photocopy of current driver’s license
    1. Return to council with “257x Volunteer Screening Application”
  • Photocopy of proof of insurance
    1. Return to council with “257x Volunteer Screening Application”

Please Note: In general, any changes in your name or residence should be reported to the council. A person who registers as “Jane Family-Name” in 2004, is screened and approved, may not be recognized in the system in 2006 when she registers as “Jane Married-Name.”

For questions about the adult screening process, call the Adult Screening Specialist at 1 (800) 447-4475 in the San Francisco Bay Area or 1 (510) 562-8470 from outside northern California.
