Robin MacGillivray…Girl Scout Champion!
$300,000 Grant from AT&T Foundation
Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area has a true champion in Robin MacGillivray, President of AT&T West, and dedicated member of the Council’s Board of Directors.
In early April, the AT&T Foundation announced a three-year grant to Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area totaling $300,000. This grant will enable the council to reach out to thousands of girls who have not had the opportunity to belong due to economic reasons or the lack of volunteers available to lead Girl Scout Troops. Communities benefiting will include areas of San Francisco, Richmond and Oakland, where community development efforts have already been launched with our Growth, Independence, Friendship and Trust (GIFT) Program. This generous grant will expand the program in these communities and will fuel more outreach to other communities in the Bay Area where financial constraints prevent girls from enjoying Girl Scouting. Funds are to be used for paid leadership, program supplies, and membership in the nation’s largest and most successful program dedicated to building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.

Having grown up as a Girl Scout in Southern California, Robin is a true believer in the Promise of Girl Scouting. Since joining the Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area Board of Directors in 2003, Robin has been a huge promoter of exciting and innovative programs designed to reach out to all girls who want to become Girl Scouts. In 2004, Robin and San Francisco Council CEO Joyce Richards founded Camp CEO. With corporate support from AT&T, this exciting project has brought top Bay Area women leaders to Camp Sugar Pine to spend an extraordinary weekend with girls who, for the most part, have never had the opportunity to become Girl Scouts. The women serve as mentors to high school girls who are from at-risk communities. The fun, adventure, and life-changing experiences found at this unique Girl Scout camp have become catalysts in the development of strong girls and powerful, caring women.
This truly wonderful experience for the mentors as well as the girls has become a yearly tradition in August. Many Girl Scouts attending Camp CEO remain active in Girl Scouting and most have set and accomplished goals of college, career, and personal empowerment. The women mentors look forward to their annual trek to camp and their time with the girls who, many say, have had a tremendous impact on their own lives.
Robin has also been instrumental as a high-level advisor on the Council’s Bold Audacious Project—Girl Scouts Save the Bay! With her colleagues at Cingular, Robin has leveraged financial and in-kind support for this grand environmental project that has drawn national acclaim and is being replicated now in other parts of California and the USA.
A tireless promoter of the Girl Scouts, Robin always has her radar up for opportunities to reach more girls. Her infectious energy and can-do spirit is an inspiration to the organization, which in 2005 awarded Robin with the Thanks Badge, the highest adult achievement in Girl Scouts of the USA. As Robin has said, “Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout!”
Thanks, Robin MacGillivray, for being such a champion for girls—building the Girl Scout experience that enables today’s girls to Grow Strong!
