On May 8, 2006, Madeleine Albright was honored with both the Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area Beacon Award and the Girl Scouts of the USA National Woman of Distinction Juliette Award. These awards are given to women who, as pioneers in their fields and as representatives of a diverse spectrum of professional and personal accomplishments, are stellar role models for today’s girls.

The evening celebrated the success of women whose professional accomplishments inspire women and girls everywhere. Secretary Albright was the first woman Secretary of State and the highest-ranking woman in the history of the United States government to that point.

Said, Secretary Albright after the event, “I am touched by the enthusiasm and confidence of the Girl Scouts, and will always treasure my evening with them. I know that our future is in such great (female) hands! This truly has been a very special evening for me, unlike any other!”

CBS 5 Early Morning News Anchor, Sydnie Kohara led the festivities engaging the assembled audience with an informative interview with Secretary Albright before opening up the forum for audience questions.

The program was topped off by the participation of over 300 Girl Scouts who acted as registrars, greeters, table ambassadors, and a 200-girl choir. Girl Scout song writer Melinda Caroll led the girls in two heart warming songs, “Every Girl Everywhere” and “Ocean of Goodness” our Girl Scouts Save the Bay theme song.

Congratulations to all of our Girl Scouts, parents, volunteers, and staff members who made this event possible!
